Artist Bio Mimi is a self-taught, Seattle-area mixed-media artist who began painting just one year ago. What started as a personal and therapeutic creative outlet has quickly grown into a passion for painting, making, experimenting, and transforming everyday materials into original works of art. Her approach is intuitive and exploratory. She works with bold color, texture, collage, abstract forms, photography, found objects, and repurposed materials while continuing to discover and develop her artistic voice. Upcycling is an important part of her practice. Old canvases, previously used frames, recycled materials, leather jackets, and unexpected objects can all become surfaces for something new. She is drawn to the idea of transformation—seeing possibility and beauty in something that might otherwise be overlooked or discarded. Right now, Mimi is especially inspired by the vibrant color, energy, and visual storytelling found in Caribbean art and artists; wolves, which she identifies with as her spirit animal; flowers and botanical forms; sacred geometry; and the beauty, shape, texture, and presence of large, magnificent Afros. These influences appear in her work through color, pattern, symbolism, organic shapes, portraiture, and experimentation. Art-making is also deeply therapeutic for Mimi. Creating gives her a place to decompress, reflect, process emotions, and become completely absorbed in working with her hands. The experience of making the artwork can be every bit as important as the finished piece. Only a year into painting, she embraces being a beginner rather than trying to hide it. Her practice is about curiosity, experimentation, learning, and giving herself permission to create without being confined by traditional rules or a single artistic style.

Artist Statement

About Me I started painting a year ago, and I'm completely self-taught. I didn't come to art through formal training. I started creating because I needed an outlet, and along the way I discovered how therapeutic making art could be for me. Painting gives me a place to quiet everything else, work with my hands, process emotions, and lose myself in the creative process. I love color and texture, but I also love taking things that already exist and imagining what else they could become. I upcycle whenever I can. An old canvas, a used frame, recycled materials, found objects, or even a leather jacket can become my next surface. Right now, my inspiration is coming from all over. I'm drawn to Caribbean artists and the incredible use of color, culture, rhythm, and energy I see in their work. I'm fascinated by flowers and their shapes and colors, and I'm exploring sacred geometry and the patterns and symbolism within it. The wolf is my spirit animal, so wolf imagery has a special meaning for me and is something I want to continue exploring creatively. And then there are Afros—big, beautiful, unapologetic Afros. I'm inspired by their beauty, volume, texture, shape, movement, and the endless possibilities they give me visually. I love the idea of an Afro becoming almost a canvas within the canvas—something that can hold color, flowers, patterns, symbols, geometry, or an entire visual story. I'm only a year into this journey, so I'm still discovering what my art will become. I don't want to put myself into one artistic box this early. I'm giving myself permission to experiment, make mistakes, try unusual materials, change directions, and follow whatever inspires me next. For me, art is therapy, discovery, transformation, and freedom—and I'm just getting started.
