Biography- Mimi Cernyar Fox 2026 Mimi has devoted her life to the visual arts. She trained in traditional art earning a four-year Bachelors of Fine Arts degree at the internationally renowned Pacific NW College of Art, in Portland Oregon and subsequently a Master of Fine Arts degree at Washington State University in Pullman WA. The influences in her life are clearly represented in her expressive works. Growing up poor, especially by today’s standards, the responsibility of being the eldest daughter and losing her mother in her childhood, provided her with a sensitivity to the human condition as it relates to trials and the “overcoming and moving through” that is necessary in life. Her understanding of both human suffering and great joy feels personal to the viewer in her portrayal of people. In her youth, Mimi attended a private Benedictine high school where she studied art and music. Growing up on the family farm working in gardens and with animals made a lifelong impression. Her spiritual paintings reflect and express not only her personal faith, but her understanding of animals and the spiritual side of the animals and their connection to their Creator. Having been influenced by music her entire life, beginning with her father listening to the jazz greats of the Big Band Era played on vinyl in the 1800s farm house she grew up in, with six of her siblings, has also been a contribution to her impressions on canvas, and are particularly notable in the movement of her ocean and sea life paintings. Mimi dabbled in singing, for the joy of it, and she can carry the vocals of a blues or jazz song along with any accomplished musicians. While attending college, she would often sing at the Jazz Quarry with vocalist Neil Diamond and the Eddie Weed band. The music experience impacted her and contributed to her inspirations for paintings in the form of expressive movement. After earning her master’s degree, Mimi supported herself and her painting by teaching art classes. The classes she taught included Understanding Art, Art History and studio courses for Pacific NW College of Art, and Eastern OR State University. Mimi has exhibiting work at Gallery 110, Seattle WA, Black-fish Gallery, Portland OR. The 8th Annual Icon Show at Lynn Hanson Gallery, Seattle WA, and Rowboat Gallery, Lincoln City OR. She was included in the annual Trinity 2021, show at Sparrow Gallery, Sacramento CA. She was presented in the on-line gallery show Anti-War 2025, an international call by Biofrin, Gallerium Art. She has had paintings at Gallerie Ettienne De Causans, Paris France 2007- 2009. The Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Guin Library, Newport OR have 7 paintings of hers in their permanent collection. Mimi’s work is in university collections and private collections across the USA. Her paintings in support of marine life have continued to be popular with the Sea-Doc Society Deer IS. WA. and they are sometimes auctioned to support the marine science work that they do in the Salish Sea. Mimi has and continues to experiment with a variety of traditional and non-traditional media. Her latest works encompass both the beauty and the gift of the horse. Her expressionist view of the horse is a spiritual take that is all at once totally unique and a joyful expression of color and beauty truly honoring “The Horse”. Her work has special emphasis on the animals that share our environment. Reflecting on her creations, Mimi is often moved by the impact they have and finds herself transported emotionally. Through her depictions of nature, with animals at the center, she hopes to inspire responsibility and compassion. Her desire is for the audience to care for these creatures and allow them to live peacefully. Ultimately, she aspires for viewers to experience genuine joy while observing and cherishing the remarkable animals that inhabit our world. Horses have long been a source of fascination and inspiration for humanity. Throughout history, they have served as loyal companions and muses for countless works of art and literature. Their elegance, power, and grace have made them enduring symbols of freedom and beauty. Subject Matter Throughout her artistic journey, Mimi has explored a wide range of subjects. In recent years, the image of the horse has become a central focus of her work. This recurring subject serves as a narrative of her younger self, evoking memories of growing up around horses. The presence of horses in her paintings is both a personal reflection and a storytelling device, connecting her past experiences to her current artistic expression. Artistic Style Inspired by Personal Experience Mimi’s paintings are characterized by vivid colors and expressive forms, especially in her portrayals of horse anatomy. She has developed a personal style that emphasizes distinctive shapes, as well as the weight of line and color. The exaggerated rumps and solid forms of the animals in her artwork highlight their strength and the essential role they play in carrying and performing for riders. This stylistic choice underscores the significance of the horse within both her personal history and her creative vision.
