Renton, WA

Contemporary impressionist oil painter. My primary work is large format in the studio, but I also paint en plein air in our beautiful state and all over the world (mostly bicycle touring and camping with paint kit). I occasionally teach private painting lessons and workshops at my warm and inviting studio in the East Renton Highlands.

Artist Statement

For me, painting is a necessary part of life. It's a bit like a partner relationship. Usually, we get along, but sometimes we fight. I go through short periods (2 weeks max) of not painting at all, and then frantically painting daily when inspiration strikes. Painting at the rate of 2 paintings a week since 2012 ( so that's well over 1000 paintings ) has only made me realize that's there's more to learn than I will ever master. The challenge is thrilling! Paintings that don't completely satisfy me get burned or painted over. As artists, we can only grow when we stick to the highest standards (which only we can set). It can be difficult to separate our sense of self from each painting. That gets much easier after many brush miles! One of my favorite things about being an artist is the comradery with other artists and art-lovers. We are all in this together!
