Artist Statement

I began my journey with urban sketching of street life in the Pacific Northwest and other parts of the world. A couple of Gabriel Campanario’s workshops helped along the way. During the pandemic I deepened my knowledge of figure drawing with Kenzo Fry and acrylic painting with Will Kemp, both online. In the last few years I have been studying oil painting (in person!) with Patrick Howe, painting primarily with oils on canvas. You’d think painting would be a solitary activity, but I’m always inspired and energized by the work of fellow artists as we all offer our unique expression about life and the world. I’m especially interested in capturing the spirit and emotional essence of my subjects—interiors, landscapes and portraits. My paintings, with vibrant colors and use of light, lean toward abstraction and have some similarity to fauvism.
