The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is gearing up to select the artist who will be commissioned to create the artwork for our 2018 Festival poster. Artists selected as the official poster artist do well both personally and for the galleries featuring their work. Recent artists include Sandy Haight, Teresa Saia, Luke Tornatzky, Kate Larson, Karen Sistek, John Ebner, and Bart Rulon. The 2017 artist will be announced soon, but applications are open for the 2018 poster artist. Visit http://www.tulipfestival.org/artists for examples.
To participate in the selection process, artists need to send the Festival a letter of interest plus two or three small samples of their work. Color photocopies are acceptable. Many artists will include a brief resume and their website address.
The letter and samples must be received by the festival office by 4:00 pm August 8, 2016. From these submissions, the Selection Committee will identify up to five semi-finalists to move forward.
In late September or early October, the Selection Committee will conduct personal interviews with the semi-finalists and narrow the group down to finalists, from whom they will select the 2018 artist. The artist receives $2000 for their work while the Festival receives the original art piece and maintains the rights to reproduce it in perpetuity.
In addition to appearing on the poster, the work is utilized on 200,000+ copies of the Festival brochure (distributed from Tacoma to Greater Vancouver, BC), on magnets, postcards, and additional ancillary products, including the Festival’s website. It is expected that the artist will be available for the Unveiling Celebration in Mount Vernon in November, 2017 and to sign the poster on weekends in April, 2018.
