I have been drawing and painting for over 70 years and teaching classes and workshops for over 60 years and I believe that all that experience and knowledge makes a difference in helping students in making serious progress in their work. I would call myself a Traditional/Impressionistic type of painter and try and teach the principles and fundamentals of that process to my students.
We use photos for references during class purposes, and encourage working from life in student assignments, but not compulsory. We talk about "How to use photos " , and their advantages and disadvantages as much can be learned and I try to teach people how to take good photographs.
With my many years of teaching and painting myself I am convinced that most paintings are ruined at the start...in that we just don't give enough time and consideration into what and how we are going to proceed with a painting...being concerned and having a process that works and gives us a better chance at getting a more successful painting.
I talk and demo about doing smaller value and color studies to find out what works and what doesn't work.... also applying the principles of Design..which will make our paintings better! Of course we talk about the influence of intuition and individual styles that enter into the equation. Most students are working mainly in oils, but pastels and acrylics are also accepted as the principles apply to them also.
Each student is at a different level and has their personal needs that we do our best to adjust the teaching for each individual. Keeping the maximum of students to 10 or 12 enables each student to get their needs better made. It is very satisfying to see the progress that the students make!
We give homework each week to those that are able to, and have critiques that have exceptional value, not only to the individual's work, but also for the rest of the students. Comments are encouraged and the whole process is in a positive and open atmosphere. We are serious, but encourage a lighthearted approach.
We also will have in class exercises to make sure we are going in the needed direction.
We hope that you can join us in taking your work to a higher level.

Here is my Material List
(...You don't need to go to extra expense by buying everything on it..)We just starting ordering more supplies online as the Art Stores have gotten so expensive. So far we are using Jerry's Artarama and Dick Blick.
Class Time : Every Wednesday - 10-1pm PST (note it often will run over) We will be zooming all of the classes, and will probably not be having the class the day before Thanksgiving and of course Christmas, .
Classes are recorded , and available to students for one week.
Neds Material List
Value studies, in bistre conte, 2b charcoal , oil, or what ever materials you have to hand...
Color studies can be done with a limited palette (three primaries black and white) or extended primary (warm and cool of every primary, black and white) , or using Neds Full palette.
Tonal Study Materials :
Neds favored material for value studies, is bistre conte or compressed charcoal(2b) on SMOOTH Newsprint.
Oil Paints:
Titanium white Cad yellow lemon Cadmium yellow lite Cadmium orange Cadmium red lite Alizarin crimson Transparent brown oxide Chromium green oxide Viridian Cobalt blue Ultramarine blue Ivory black. I will add other colors as I feel the need. Basically I have a warm and cool of each primary.
Brushes: I mostly use bristle brushes, mainly filberts and brights #2,#4,#6,#8,#10. I usually have at least two or three of each. I will use some round sables for detail or to sign my name.
Panels:
I encourage students to work smaller value and color studies in the 6"x8" to 8"x10" 9x12 range
Cleaning: Have a good size container to clean your brushes with and a small cup for your medium. I use odorless Turp to clean brushes and for my medium.
Palette: I usually use a glass or plexiglass palette, wood palettes are fine as are the fold out palette pals. Please, no paper palettes. I have a palette knife and/or a scraper to clean my palette and a roll of paper towels to clean my palette and brushes with. Equipment and paints do get expensive, and do the best you can, but cheap paints, brushes and panels can really keep a person from doing their best work.
Reference Material :
As this is an online class, we mostly need to work from photos, though I encourage students to also work from life as much as possible. I will have photos available, but I do want you all to look through your own photographs, as it does make a difference if you've experienced the subject you paint first hand.
We can learn a lot even from photos...same principles apply and we will talk about what we need to change working from photos.
Bring a good sense of humor and we will work hard and have a good time doing it!
