We use the ZOOM system for these online classes. Classes are recorded and available for one week.
I have been drawing and painting for over 70 years and teaching classes and workshops for over 60 years and I believe that all that experience and knowledge makes a difference in helping students in making serious progress in their work. I would call myself a Traditional/Impressionistic type of painter and try and teach the principles and fundamentals of that process to my students.
We use photos for references during class purposes, and encourage working from life in student assignments, but not compulsory. We talk about “How to use photos ” , and their advantages and disadvantages as much can be learned and I try to teach people how to take good photographs.
With my many years of teaching and painting myself I am convinced that most paintings are ruined at the start…in that we just don’t give enough time and consideration into what and how we are going to proceed with a painting…being concerned and having a process that works and gives us a better chance at getting a more successful painting.
I talk and demo about doing smaller value and color studies to find out what works and what doesn’t work…. also applying the principles of Design..which will make our paintings better! Of course we talk about the influence of intuition and individual styles that enter into the equation. Most students are working mainly in oils, but pastels and acrylics are also accepted as the principles apply to them also.
Each student is at a different level and has their personal needs that we do our best to adjust the teaching for each individual. Keeping the maximum of students to 10 or 12 enables each student to get their needs better made. It is very satisfying to see the progress that the students make!
We give homework each week to those that are able to, and have critiques that have exceptional value, not only to the individual’s work, but also for the rest of the students. Comments are encouraged and the whole process is in a positive and open atmosphere. We are serious, but encourage a lighthearted approach.
We also will have in class exercises to make sure we are going in the needed direction.
We hope that you can join us in taking your work to a higher level.
