Gallery North announces our June Featured Artist Exhibit: “Wood, Paper, Metal” featuring Naomi Schneider, Sachi Tanimoto, and Anne-Lise Deering

Naomi Schneider started woodcarving in 1982, when she began taking private classes in Japan. She began teaching woodcarving in 1984. She has produced many styles in this art, including kibori, a picture inscribed on wood, sometimes painted and other times in natural wood tones. Themes vary from natural subjects to manmade objects.

Since 2006, she has displayed her work at Seattle’s Cherry Blossom Festival and other art festivals.  She is a longtime member of Gallery North artists’ cooperative.

Sachi Tanimoto-Palermo is a practitioner of the Japanese art of senga, or paper-cutting. She originally studied calligraphy with her father, a master calligrapher, from early childhood, and studied senga with Toru Otsuki, a master of the Japanese Senga Association. She is a certified senga teacher. Her work has been exhibited and won numerous awards in shows both in Japan and the Puget Sound region.

“Strain your ears. Do you hear the sound of the knife running to cut paper? A picture will be born from that sound and that feeling. Just like that, light comes into the darkness, one tiny piece at a time. When the light shines on black paper, it won’t be just paper any more. It will be flowers, animals, vistas that are full of life! This is my greatest challenge, to express the shine of life through senga.”

Anne-Lise Deering was born in Norway and came to the US after finishing school. She studied art with a ceramic major at Penn State University and got her BA degree in 1977. She worked for several years as a potter in her own studio in State College, PA, until she was introduced to bas relief and medallic sculpture. After she moved to Edmonds, WA in 1999 her focus has mainly been on sculpture and medallic art. Currently she serves as president of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. Her medals have been widely exhibited in the US and Canada and international group exhibitions throughout Europe.

Her work is in many private collections in the US and abroad. Many of Anne-Lise’s medals are an expression of her emotions in dealing with life’s many blows.

Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no formal reception with refreshments, however Gallery North will be open until 8 pm on Third Thursday, June 17, the Edmonds Art Walk, at which you may meet the artists.
