Major Database Upgrades Completed

We have finished some major database updates to the site that were started over the weekend. Editing member profiles, submitting calendar events and viewing member galleries was unavailable for a period of time.

Everything *should* be back to normal now.

If you want to move to Memphis

I have a house in Memphis, in a great area, near galleries, restaurants, populated by a lot of artists and musicians. I want to sell it, because otherwise I have to continue to rent it, and it takes too much time and head space. I am going to list it with a realtor, next week, and when i do the price will have to increase to cover their commission. But for this weekend, I am selling it for $129,900. The mortgage payments would be $641. per mo

It has 2+ BRs. A southern bungalow. If more than 2 people bought it, it would be really cheap, and you could sell it later this year at over $142,500, (this is what the realtor wants to list it at). So you could make it a place to work for a while and then make money when you sell it. I have a mortgage lender who can help with financing. More people = easier financing. Also would consider a lease option for the right people.

Nominations Needed WA State Arts Alliance

WE NEED YOUR NOMINATIONS NOW - Deadline May 11

Louise Miller Arts Advocacy Award and Local Hero Award

Your Washington State Arts Alliance (WSAA) will present these prestigious awards to LOCAL, STATEWIDE or NATIONAL public officials who have shown outstanding leadership in advancing the arts and arts education. The Louise Miller Award is presented to an elected official who has made an impact at the state or national level. The Local Hero award will be awarded to someone who has made an impact in a local Washington community. The awards will be presented at the WSAA Annual Membership Meeting in June 2008

To be eligible, nominees must be elected (voted) or appointed (e.g. City Manager) to a position of governance - U.S. Congress, state legislature, city, county, school board, etc. Cultural workers and heads of local arts commissions or councils are not eligible. To see past recipients, go to: Past Award Recipients.

It's easy to nominate an elected official. Compose a few paragraphs or send a one-page letter that:
1) Describes the nominee's commitment to the arts and specific actions in promoting the arts and arts education, including recent accomplishments
2) Who has been impacted? (stats are always good)
3) Any additional letters of support

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT NOW! Reflect on the officials your in your community and determine who is deserving of the "Local Hero Award" and who, on a broader scope, should receive special recognition with the "Louise Miller Award." Let's encourage our public officials to continue their important support of the arts and arts education in Washington communities and schools!

Langston Hughes Fest Animation Workshop




Sister Act Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs Teach Storytelling Through
Animation

(Seattle, WA) -- The 5th Annual African American Film
 Festival
presents an animation workshop by twin sister teaching act, Shawnee
and Shawnelle Gibbs, creators of the online animated series, Adopted
by Aliens. The series, a comedy created with Flash, centers around a
pre-teen girl struggling to fit in at school and with a new
extra-terrestrial family.

The animation workshop, which takes place on Saturday, April 19th,
includes a screening of the series, Adopted by Aliens, an introduction
to Flash Animation, and tools that empower artists--young and old--to
create their own cartoons.

This will be the duo's second consecutive workshop through Langston
Hughes African American Film Festival. They were invited in 2007.

A highlight at this year's conference, Andrea Peterson, National Teacher of the Year will present the closing Keynote Address. The National Teacher of the Year Program focuses public attention on teaching excellence and is the oldest and most prestigious awards program for teachers. Peterson, a music teacher at Monte Cristo Elementary School in Granite Falls, Washington, is the 57th National Teacher of the Year.
