Magnolia Arts Festival Call For Artists

by Joe McDonald on April 21, 2009, filed under Call For Artists

The Annual Magnolia Summer Festival and Art Show, which is held the first
weekend in August, has become a well known tradition in the community. A part of the festival is the poster contest. Again this year, artists are invited to submit art work to grace our festival poster, postcard and the cover of our festival program.

Artists are invited to submit a piece of artwork or design around the theme of Summer in Magnolia. The media can be photo, watercolor, oil, and mixed media. The finished poster will be 11 x 17 inches, in color, and contain information about the festival.

The winning piece of art or design will be featured on the 2009 Magnolia Summer Festival and Art Show poster and postcard, the cover of the program, and other print media advertising the event. Information about the artist will appear in the program. If desired, the winner can have a free booth at the Summer Festival.

Can anyone provide feedback on this event? I’m wondering how the turnout is. I checked out the website and saw lots of pictures of the event with no one there. I know “sometimes” photos are taken before things get busy…

Its a rather small, sort of “hokey” event with mostly Sunday painters who entered the juried show and a few booths, less than 6 when I was there year before last. I sold nothing and the traffic was sparse. The main event is a parade, the food and inflatable slides for the kids. I did end up getting an illustration commission through an indirect contact: a woman saw my work and gave my name and info to her son, a designer.
