Do You Buy Local Art? Why?

by Joe McDonald on December 14, 2012, filed under Local Art Scene

The Stranger recently published an article written by Jen Graves, titled: "Buy Art! If You Have Never Bought a Piece of Original Art, You Are Doing Life Wrong". The basic premise is that most Seattleites don’t buy art… but they should start.

Here at SeattleArtists.com, quite obviously, we’ve been a long time advocate of buying local art. This website launched in 1999 before there was anything else online for local independent artists. Our mission was always to use the available digital tools to faithfully promote artists and their work.

I think Jen at the Stranger has written a well thought out article and I agree that buying art can be intimidating. We’re always seeking out ways to tear down those barriers and make any art lover, new or experienced, feel comfortable buying art. You don’t have to be a master curator to buy art – you just have to see it, fall in love with it, and buy it.

So, what has your experience been shopping for or buying local Seattle art, whether in a gallery, art walk, or street fair? Comment below and let me know your thoughts! Do you buy local art? No? Yes? Why?
